Academy of Art University fashion student Jaime Cole is featured on a new episode of MTV's True Life. The show documents her struggles and triumphs as she finishes her MFA degree on the runway at Bryant Park.
The episode "True Life: I'm Going to Fashion Week" follows three young women pursuing careers in the fashion industry. The show examines the chaos and pressure experienced during one of the biggest weeks in the international fashion world. The cameras tail the three up-and-comers, giving viewers a behind-the-scenes look at the ins and outs of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.
Jaime, in her last year in the MFA program at Academy of Art University's fashion school, has designed a menswear collection. Along with a few other designers, she meets with a stylist who wants to take the collection to another level. He suggests a Marvin the Martian vibe so Jaime and her partner have to rush around the city to look for the proper accessories.
The day of the show, Jaime must navigate through the dozens of orders coming at her from every direction. Dodging catastrophes, she's finally able to sit down and watch her show to see how the collection turned out. Thankfully, it is a hit on the runway and everything comes together.
Academy of Art University is the only school to show during New York Fashion Week. The show was taped during Fall Fashion Week, which took place in February 2008.
"We view this opportunity as part of our commitment to launch the careers of our graduates," said Dr. Elisa Stephens, President of Academy of Art University. "Debuting their collections during New York Fashion Week makes sense as the national and international fashion community is in town at that time."
